981,267. Mechanical jacks. O. H. LAGERKVIST. April 9, 1963, No. 14151/63. Heading B8J. A mechanical jack comprises a bracket sleeve 1 having a load-carrying peak 2 and a pair of parallel plates 3. A lower gripping member 6 engages the lift rod 4 of the jack and is pivotally mounted on the plates 3. Another pair of plates 9 form an extension of an operating lever 8 and are journalled in the plates 3 by a bolt 10. An upper gripping member 14 is connected by a link 12 to the lever plates 9 and has a bar 18 which can be engaged with an abutment 19 on the lever 8. Springs 15, 16 serve to bring the two gripping members 6, 14 into engagement with the lift rod 4 and a spring 17 holds the lever 8 in its in-operative position when not actuated. When the lever 8 is swung to the right and downwardly the upper gripping member 14 is forced against the lift rod 4. At the same time the bracket sleeve 1 and the lower gripping member 6 move upwardly along the lift rod. When the lever is returned, the lower gripping member 6 forms a support on the lift rod at the same time as the upper gripping member 14 is moved upwardly along the lift rod by the link 12. The bracket sleeve 1 can be released so as to move to another position along the lift rod, by swinging the lever 8 towards the lift rod or by pressing the lower portion of the bar 18 towards the lever 8. A hook 20 for securing the jack to a suitable support enables the jack to be used as a winch. A method of using the jack in the replacement of railway sleepers is described.
