[Class 78 (iv).] Apparatus for lifting a stack of bricks &c. comprises a frame b, of inverted U-shape which spans the stack and two or more pairs of gripping levers d pivoted at opposite sides of the limbs of the frame, the levers being connected with the lifting gear and carrying at their lower ends transverse holders h with resilient means for engaging the lowest row of bricks. As shown, in end view in Fig. 2, the two levers of each pair are connected by toggle links i with a bolt j, and two such bolts j are connected to opposite ends of a bar k connected with the hoisting shackle n. When the device is lowered into position over a stack of bricks, it is supported on the stack by a plate t carried by threaded spindles s, s adjustable in the frame, with the holders h clear of the ground and the bar k resting upon the frame. The bar k may be locked in this position by pins on a bar o which may be moved longitudinally into the locking position by a hand-lever O<1>, in order that the device may be lifted without gripping. When the looking device is released, and the device is lifted by the shackle n, the bar k moves upwards in the frame until the holders h engage the load or the bar meets stops which limit its movement. The threaded rods s, s may be adjusted vertically to suit the height of the stack by a hand-wheel which operates two worm-wheels s<1> mounted on nuts in a casing r carried between the two frames b or opposite ends of the device, and housings are provided on this casing to receive the rods o. Each holder h is a channel bar in which a length or lengths h<2> of indiarubber is wedged by a bar of wood or similar material so as to protrude from the channel. The rubber is shaped at h<4> so that it may be reversed when worn, and so that it cannot be gripped between the bricks and the edges of the channel bar, and vertical slots h<3> are formed in the rubber to permit compression. The indiarubber may be replaced by helical springs. Specification 274,221, [Class 78 (iv)], is referred to.
