Abstract

1370816 Load gripping devices GROUPEMENT POUR LES ACTIVITES ATOMIQUES ETAVANCEES 28 Oct 1971 [29 October 1970] 50278/71 Heading B8H A device for gripping long cylindrical objects consists of a framework 1 provided at least at each end with a bi-stable gripper including jaws 2, 3 which are mounted on a pivot 4 and which are connected by links 6, 8 to a toggle linkage 11, 12. The pivot 9 connecting the links 6, 8, 11 is constrained to move vertically, and the pivot 13 connecting the toggle links 11, 12 is mounted in a transversely movable slide member 14. The toggle link 12 is telescopic and is connected to the frame work by a pivot 15. Transverse movement of the slide member 14 to open or close the jaws 2, 3 at a predetermined location is caused by the action of fixed jacks 32, 33. As shown, actuation of the jack 32 will cause opening of the jaws- Initial movement of the jack piston causes a piston 27 to move to the end of a bore in the slide member 14 against the action of a spring 31, thereby allowing balls 25 in openings in the member 14 to be released from locking engagement with grooves 23 in the wall of the hollow cylindrical member 22 housing the slide member. Continued movement of the jack piston then moves the slide member to the left until it engages a stop member 19<SP>1</SP>, thereby moving the pivot 13 through the dead-centre position between the pivots 9, 15. Similarly, actuation of the jack 33 causes closing of the jaws. Supplementary jaw pieces 36 may be provided for gripping objects of different diameters.
