Be it known that I, JoI-IN A. OLSON, a, citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machine vises and is particularly applicable to vises of this character which are operated by pneumatic or other suitable power means. A vise for machines should be capable of rapid manipulation in order to open and close the same and should beadapted to exert a relatively great clamping force in order to hd the y invention has these necessary or desirable features as well as various other advantages.
The objects of this invention are to provide a new and improved form of vise havin the above mentioned qualities; to provide a vise having simple and powerful closing mechanism; and in general, to provide such an improved construction as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat ing this invention:

Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views showing certain details of construction.
In the preferred form, as shown in these drawings, 5 designates the main body or frame of the vise which is provided with a jaw 6 having a removable false jaw or clamping member 7. A sliding jaw 8 is mounted in suitable guide-ways in the body 5 and is provided with a removable jaw 9. A cross-head or slide 10 is mounted in suit able guide-ways 11 in the body 5. The slide 10 and jaw 8 are connected by'means of an adjusting screw 12 whereby the oplening between the jaws may be regulated. 12 engages with a threaded hole 13 in the jaw 8 and its opposite end is rotatably secured in the slide 10. The end 14: of the screw is squared for engagement with an adjusting wrench.
The lever or toggle mechanism for operating the slide 10 constitutes one of the principal features of this invention. This'slide has a downwardly extending lug or projection 15 which is provided with a hardened pressure plate 16 having a semicircular recess 17 for engagement with the correspondingly shaped end of a toggle arm 18. This he screw 1 arm is connected to the slide or cross-head by means of a pin 19 so that the slide will i be pulled backwardly by the arm to open the jaws. The opposite end of the arm 18 is pivoted at 20 to a lever 21. One endof thls lever has a pin 22 which projects downwardly into a block 23 which is secured in the lower part of the body 5. The hole 24 which receives the pin is somewhat elongated so that the pin maytravel in the block. The adjacent end of the lever 21 has a recess 25 which is adapted to engage with the free end of an arm 26. The opposite end of the arm 26 fits in a recess 27 in a hardened block 28 which is secured in the end of the body 5. Although the pressure is exerted against this block, a pin 29 is provided as a pivot for the arm 26 in order to prevent its displacement. A second pin 30 serves as a stop for the arm so as to hold it in position end of this arm being pivoted at 33 to a I slide 34. Thls slidemoves in a guide-way 35 and is connected to the. piston rod 36 of a iston 37 in a cylinder 38.
he cylinder may be provided with any suitable means for regulating the inlet and exhaust of air therefrom. The piston 37 moves to the right, as seen in Fig. 1, to actuate the jaw closing mechanism. This causes the arm 32't0 swing the lever 21 on its fulcrum or pivot 22 and simultaneously causes the arm 18 to press against the cross head or slide 10 and move it forwardly. This gives a relatively fast initial closing movement, but as the jaws approach their final clamping position, the outer end of the lever 21 engages with the short arm 26 and swings the free end of the arm downwardly. This causes the lever 21 to be forced forwardly, this movement being permitted by the elongated hole 24. This combined thrust, toggle and lever action produces an exceedingl great clamping force with comparative y small pressure in the cylinder.' Furthermore, the action is such that the o ening and closing movement of the jaws to wlde position which is desirable for inserting the work pieces, is rapidly effected. It will be noted that my improved vise ma be chan ed in order to be adapted for di erent mac ines or uses, without departing from the spirit of this invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the construction and arrangement as shown, except as specified in the following claims in which I claim:
1. In a machine vise, the combination of a body portion having a fixed jaw, a slidable aw mounted on said body, a slide mounted on said bodyvadjacent to the slidable jaw, adjustin means between the slide and slidable aw, a lever having a movable pivot connection with the body, an
arm pivoted to said lever and engaging with the slide, an arm pivotallymounte in the body adjacent to the pivoted end of said lever and adapted to engage with the corresponding end of the lever to form a toggle when the lever has reached a predetermined position, and means for actuating said lever, the arrangement being such that when the lever approaches alinement with the center of the body, the arms will co-act with the lever to force the slide forwardgr 2. ctuatmg mechanism for a vise, com prising a lever having a slidable pivot connection at one end, with a fixed portion of the vise, and having a recess in the adjacent end thereof, a swinging arm having one end engaging with a fixed abutment and the other end arranged to engage with said recess when thelever has reached a predetermined position, an arm pivoted to said lever and engaging with a movab e portion lever.
