[Class 78 (iii)] A lifting or stacking truck has fixed uprights 12 and load receiving members 7 adapted to be inserted under the load and tilted relative to a hoisting carriage 3 by a vertical lost motion between the carriage and the load receiving members which brings the pivot 13 of the load receiving members closer to a stop or roller 16 on the hoisting carriage. The uprights 2 are mounted at the forward end of the automotive truck 1 and the hoisting carriage 3 is guided on the uprights by runners 4 and hoisted by chains 5. The lifting forks 7 are suspended from the carriage 3 by springs 9 and have pins 13 engaging inclined slots 14 in cam plates 15 fixed to the carriage 3. The vertical arm of the fork rests against a roller 16 and the tension of the spring 9 is such that in the unloaded position the pins 13 are at the upper ends of the slots 14 and the horizontal arm of the fork can readily be pushed under the load. When the carriage 3 is lifted relative movement takes place between the carriage and the forks until the pins 13 reach the lower ends of the slots the forks being thus tilted to the position shown in dotted lines. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the pin and slot connection is replaced by a link 19 pivoted to the forks at 13 and to the carriage 3 at 20. The spring 9 normally holds the link against an upper stop 21 the fork being then horizontal or downwardly inclined. When the carriage is hoisted the link moves to abut a lower stop 22 and the fork is tilted to the position shown. The tension springs 9 may be replaced by compression springs acting --between abutments on the carriage and the lifting forks.
