Abstract
893,998. Lift trucks; lifting drums. GOODBOURNE & BYRNE Ltd. Nov. 18, 1960 [Nov. 25, 1959], No. 40089/59. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). In a drum-lifter of the type having an upper and a lower claw 38, 36, which are coupled so as to automatically engage the rim of a drum when the lower claw is pressed against the rim, the lifting head is suspended from a main frame 13 by links 21, 22 and biased upwardly by a spring 29. Further, when the drum is set down, a face 55 on a housing 25 abuts the drum and turns the housing anticlockwise about a pivot 48 on the head, thus urging an abutment 51 on the housing against ends 52 of the links 21 to swing the links downwardly and disengage the lower claw from the drum without juddering. As described, the lifting head rests on a bracket 30 which takes the weight when a drum is lifted, the side of the drum adjacent the bottom thereof resting against brackets attached to the frame 13 which also act as guides to align the lifter with a drum. The frame 13 is attached to a fork-lift truck by a subsidiary frame on which the frame 13 is slidable transversely, locking means being provided between the two frames. The linkage between the upper and lower jaws is such that a small deflection of the lower jaw produces a much bigger movement of the upper jaw.
