491,260. Cooling dynamo - electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROBERTS, L., and BALL, R. D. April 13, 1937, No. 10493. [Class 35] A machine is cooled by an external fan mounted within a cowl at one end of the machine and driven by a direct-coupled auxiliary motor mounted on the cowl or on an end plate between the bearing bracket and the cowl. In the case of enclosed motors, the auxiliary motor may also drive an internal fan. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the fan motor 1 is carried by a plate 11 between the bearing bracket and the cowl 2 enclosing the external fan 14 and also drives a fan 12 circulating internal air through the stator ducts 13. External air is passed over fins 10 on the stator or through ducts therein. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the motor 1 is mounted on the cowl 15 and drives the internal fan through gearing 19. In a modification, both fans are on a shaft direct-coupled to the fan motor shaft. Where a single fan is used, the fan motor is preferably mounted on the outside of the cowl. An external fan may be provided at each end of the machine . The cowl may also enclose tubes carrying cooling fluid. Interlocks may be provided to ensure that the fan motor is energized when the main circuit is closed and an indicator may be provided to give warning of failure of the fan motor.
