Abstract

438,210. Cooling dynamo electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JACKSON, F. M., c/o General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. June 1, 1934, No. 16418. [Class 35] A traction motor, which may have two axially disposed armatures, is cooled by external means formed as a unit with its casing and arranged at one side thereof in such a position that it is wholly or mainly between the planes containing the top and bottom of the motor casing. In the form shown, the gear wheel 13 driven by the motor pinion 12 has a toothed extension 15 for driving a pinion 16 on the shaft of the fan 11 which sucks out through the duct 18 the air which enters the ends of the casing 1. The air passes through ducts in the two armatures located in this casing; the air may travel in the opposite direction if required. In a modified form, the fan is direct-coupled to an auxiliary motor supported by the casing surrounding the axle 3 about which axle are bearings provided on the motor casing as in the Figure.
