Abstract

800,853. Mounting radiators. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 17, 1955 [June 18, 1954], No. 17954/54. Class 79(3) A radiator for cooling a rail vehicle prime mover and a fan 24 for circulating cooling air through the radiator are carried by a roof section 15 which is detachably secured to the vehicle, the radiator being in two sections 16, 17 one on each side of the longitudinal centre line of the vehicle and the fan 24 being disposed between the sections 16, 17. As shown the rail vehicle has a Deltic diesel engine 13 driving generator 14 connected to electric traction motors (not shown). Directly above the engine the roof 12 is provided with the removable section 15 which carries, in addition to the radiators sections 16, 17, and the fan 24, a pair of radiator sections 18 for cooling the engine lubricant and an associated fan 23. A header tank 22 is provided between the fans 23, 24 which are driven from the engine through an auxiliary gear box 33, universally jointed shafts 34, 47 and gear boxes 37, 45. Alternatively the fans may be driven by individual electric motors or by a single motor gearconnected to the fans. Air is drawn in through louvres 20 hinged at 21 to the roof section 15 and expelled by the fans as shown by the arrows in Fig. 3. The locomotive electric drive may be replaced by a mechanical or hydraulic drive.
