Abstract

491,187. Vehicle wheels. FIRESTONE STEEL PRODUCTS CO. Dec. 31, 1937, No. 36238. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 144 (ii)] A wheel-rim comprises a baseportion having outwardly-coned seats for wedging - engagement with the tyre-beads, and a pair of side flanges both movable on the seats to free the beads, one of the flanges being permanently secured to the base portion of the .rim. Fig. 3 shows one form in which the rim - base comprises coned seats 36 and shallow flanges 38, 37 against which the tyre - retaining flanges 39, 42, abut in use. The flange 39 is permanently, but loosely, secured to the flange 38 by a rivet 40, the detachable flange 42 having a stud 45 which engages a slot in the flange 37 to prevent creep. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the detachable flange 55 is secured, by a loosefitting rivet 58, to a split locking-ring 54 co-operating with a groove 53 at the edge of the rim-base. To prevent creep of the flange 55, the ring 54 is formed with a lug 64 engaging a slot in the outer wall of the groove. Fig. 8 shows a further modification in which the rimbase is formed by a split ring joined-up by a plate 73 on one end engaging a lug 76 on the other end. Creep of the detachable flange 79 is prevented by means of a lug 84 struck-up from the rim-base engaging a slot in the flange.
