[Class 60] [Also in Group XXIV] A needle-pointing or side-grinding apparatus for carding-engines, adapted to be mounted in the known grinder brackets, has its parts arranged substantially concentrically. The grinding discs c<6> are carried by a sleeve c<1> which rotates with a drum c and is moved back and forth along the drum by a cam and butterfly mechanism c<2>, c5. The drum c is carried by a shaft a on one side and a tubular shaft c<4>, which surrounds the shaft a<1> of the butterfly cam c<2>, on the other. The drum and discs are moved laterally, to vary the penetration of the discs into the carding, by the rotation of two eccentric bushes b, b which form the bearings supporting the drum c. The drum c is driven by means of a pulley a<x>, the cam c<2> from the tubular shaft c<4> through a reduction gearing A<6> and the bushes b, b through reduction gearing A, A<x>. The gearings A, Ax each comprise two similar sets of gears in series and each gear set comprises a fixed internally-toothed wheel i<3>, an internally toothed driven wheel j<1> and two external toothings i<1>, i<2> on a wheel i which is freely mounted upon a rotating driving eccentric h<1>. The gearing A<6> comprises an internally-toothed driving wheel s fixed upon the tubular shaft c<4>, an internally-toothed driven wheel t<1> fixed upon the shaft a<1> and two toothings r<1>, r<2> upon a wheel r which is freely mounted upon a stationary eccentric A<5>. The bushes bare provided with marks so that they can be set initially to suit either a right-hand or left-hand drive. The mechanism may be driven through gearing attached to the main shaft of the carding engine. For setting the grinding discs in relation to the carding, a device similar to that described for that purpose in Specification 380,957 may be used, modified by the addition of an adjustable support for the guide plate and plunger.
