Abstract

441,146. Printing-machines. QUICK, C. G., BENNISON, W. E., and MAY, J. L., 109, Borough Road, London. July 17, 1934, No. 20940. [Class 100 (ii)] Rotary machines; drying - apparatus.-In a rotary intaglio printing-machine the printed web is fed over a drying-drum driven by variable epicyclic gearing which permits the drum to be driven at speeds varying in small and constant steps depending upon the rise of the printing-drum and linear speed of the web. The drum is mounted on a shaft 1 driven by an epicyclic gearing comprising a cage 8 fitted with two sets of planetary gears 3, 4 and 5, 6. The gears 5, 6 are driven by a shaft 12 coaxial with the shaft 1 and driven from a shaft 16 by gearing 15, 14, 13. The cage 8 is formed with a gear 19, and a gear 18 (not shown), is mounted on an adjustable arm concentric with the gear 19 and can be put in and out of gear with a gear 17 secured adjustably to the shaft 16. A series of gears 17 with teeth varying in number by a difference of one tooth are provided, and the speed imparted to the shaft 1 and the drying-drum depend on the particular gear 17 which is fitted to the shaft 16. Other parts of the machine, e.g. the cutting-cylinders, or drawing rollers, or folding apparatus may be driven from the shaft 1, and the shaft 1 may drive the drying-drum by means of a slipping-clutch as described in Specification 441,147. The shaft 16 may be driven from the printing- machine by gearing and a clutch which permits the printing-machine to be driven without driving the drying-drum.
