[Also in Group XVI] Mechanism for adjusting the circumferential register of a printing cylinder 2 whilst the machine is running comprises a shaft 5 intermediate the cylinder shaft and the main driving shaft, gear 4, 6 respectively keyed to and freely rotatable on the shaft 5 and meshing respectively with a gear 3 on the cylinder shaft and a driving gear 7, the gear 6 having fixed thereto a gear 9 and the shaft 5 having keyed thereto a gear 10, the two gears 9, 10 having different numbers of teeth and being coupled by a planet gear 11 on a carrier 12, rotatable about the shaft 5; during normal running the carrier 12, gears 4, 6, 9, 10, 11 and shaft 5 remain relatively fixed, and to adjust the register the carrier 12 is driven relatively to the shaft 5 through a clutch arrangement to alter the relative positions of the gears 9, 10 and therefore of the gears 3, 7. Two adjacent gears 13, 14 with differing numbers of teeth are fixed respectively to the carrier 12 and shaft 5 and are always in mesh with gears 21, 20 which, if it is desired to alter the register, are coupled by clutch means 20<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>1</SP>when the gear 20 is moved axially by a rod 23 connected to a pneumatically or hydraulically-operated diaphragm 32. Two such arrangements are provided for forward or backward movement respectively of the gear 3 relatively to the gear 7 and the control valves for the diaphragms are operated from a control panel by means preventing simultaneous operation of both diaphragms.
