Abstract

394,089. Printing-machines. PAYNE, B. W., Globe Engineering Works, New Mills, Stockport. March 18, 1932, No. :8082. [Class 100 (ii).] Impression adjustments.-In a multi-colour printing-machine the worm b which constitutes the driving connection between the box wheel a of a printing-roller and its sleeve or hub d, and which is turned about its axis only for angularly adjusting the wheel and sleeve relatively to one another, is in driving connection with a double gear-wheel i, j or two wheels carried by the box wheel, and a further gear-wheel k coaxial with the box wheel and gearing with the double wheel, either directly or through a reverse gear-wheel p, is provided, together with means for controlling the direct and reverse gear drive, the wheel k being normally free to rotate with the wheel with which it gears, but having means associated therewith by which its rate of rotation can be controlled so that the angular adjustment of the sleeve d relatively to the box wheel a can be effected in either a forward or a reverse direction. The worm b meshes with a wormwheel c on the sleeve d, and its shaft also carries a worm-wheel which meshes with a worm f on a shaft g which has mounted thereon the double wheel i, j. The wheel k, which meshes with the wheel i, is mounted on a sleeve k<1> slidable on an extension m of the sleeve d by means of a handle n, and the sleeve k<1> is splined within a brake drum o which forms an enclosure for the various gear-wheels. The wheel p meshes with the wheel j and can be engaged by the wheel by moving the handle n. The boss of the brake drum carries a spiderframe q secured to the box-wheel a by long bolts r, on one of which is mounted the wheel p, and the shaft g of the worm f is mounted at one end in the spider and at the other in the box wheel in bearings h. The brake drum may have a part s adapted to be hand-gripped to retard or arrest its motion, and another part t may serve to receive a brake block or blocks or a brake band of V-form. Retardation of the brake drum will cause the worm b to be turned in one or the other direction according to whether the wheel p meshes with the wheel k or not. The several brakes for the drums o of a machine may be brought to a common point or grouped so that the operator can make the registration adjustments of the patterns whilst observing the printed material coming from the machine. Also controls for the wheels k may be brought together for convenience in operation.
