PRINTING MACHINE Filed March 14. 1933 Patented Oct. 30, 1934 evant PATENT OFFlCE PRINTING MACHINE Benjamin William Payne, New Mills, England, assignor to The Calico Printers Association Limited, Manchester, England, a British company Application March 14,1933, Serial No. 660,763 In Great Britain March 18, 1932 4 Claims;
This invention relates to printing machines in which a number of printing rollers co-operate with a single impression cylinder for the purpose of printing patterns in several colours.
The object of my present invention is to provide improved means for efiecting the relative adjustment of the printing rollers so as to ensure. that the several patterns printed by the respective rollersare in fit or register accurately with one another.
Heretofore the adjustment of the printing rollers has been effected by mounting the wheels (termed box wheels) driving the printing rollers upon sleeves which are connected to the mandrels -of the printing rollers, and by providing a driving connection between each wheel and sleeve which is adjustable to advance or retard the sleeveangularly relatively to the wheel. Such driving connection usually comprises a worm, and adjustment is effected by manually turning the worm by a lever or tommytbar. This is a dangerous operation if carried out whilst the machine is running and in addition the operator whilst making the adjustment cannot see the efiect thereof upon the pattern.
.In accordance with my present invention I provide for the adjustment of the drive to each printing roller by means which, whilst under the control of the operator, are actuated by the machinedrive.
My invention comprises the combination with the worm which constitutes the driving connection betweenthe box wheel and its sleeve or hub,
and which is turned about its axis, only for angu- I larly adjusting the wheel and sleeve relatively to one another, of a double wheel or two wheels carried by the box wheel and in driving connection with the worm shaft, and a further wheel coaxial with the box wheel and gearing with the double wheel or two wheels carried by the box wheel either directly or through a reverse gear, with means for controlling the direct and reverse gear drive, said further Wheel being normally free to rotate with the wheel with which it gears, but having means associated therewith by which its rate of rotation can be controlled and so the angular adjustment of the sleeve relatively to the box wheel be effected in either a forward or a reverse direction.
I Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawing:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation and Figure 2 a cross sectional elevation on the line 11 of Figure 1, showing one convenient ap- 'plication of my invention.
The same reference letters in the two views indicate the same parts.
The box wheel a has the usual worm I) mounted upon one side face, such worm meshing with a worm wheel 0 upon the sleeve or hub d by which the box wheel is carried. The worm shaft carries a worm wheel e which meshes with a worm 1 upon a shaft g (carried at one end by the box wheel in bearings it) which has a double gear Wheel 2', 7' thereon. The double gear wheel is adapted to be engaged by a gear wheel is upon a stub axle-like extension 771, of the sleeve or hub (I. The gear wheel is is upon a sleeve or thimble like part 10 movable endwise by means of the handle n and splined within a brake drum 0 which forms as shown an enclosure for the various gear wheels before described. An idler gear wheel :0 which meshes with the teeth 9' of the double gear wheel upon the shaft g can be engaged by the gear wheel it when the latter is moved axially out of engagement with the wheel 2 by means of the handle n.
The boss of the brake drum 0 carries a spider like frame q secured to the box wheel by long bolts 1' and forming an outer bearing for the shaft g.
The brake drum 0 may have a part s thereof which can be conveniently gripped by hand to retard or arrest its motion. Another part 1. may serve to receive a brake block or blocks or a brake band of V form.
With the arrangement before described, if the brake drum be free to rotate, the adjustment worm 1) upon the box wheel will remain stationary upon its axis whilst rotating about the axis of the box wheel to drive the mandrel of the printing roller through the worm wheel 0 and sleeve d. If now the brake drum has its motion retarded or stopped, the sleeve with the wheel is will be retarded or stopped, which in turn will set in motion the double gear wheel i, 7'. This will cause rotation of the worm wheel e through the worm J and consequently will produce a rotation of the worm b about its ax s to modify the rotative movement imparted to the worm wheel 0 by the said worm. If the wheel 7c is in mesh with the idler or reverse gear p prior to retarding or stopping the motion of the brake drum the worm b will be turned about its axis in reverse direction when braking occurs. Accordingly the rotation of the mandrel of the printing roller may be speeded up or retarded relatively to that of its box wheel a, as desired.
The brake may be actuated or applied in any convenient manner. If desired, the brake conment control mechanism to suit any particular requirements.
What I claim is: f 1. In printing machines, the combination of a box wheel, a sleeve for said box wheel, a worm wheel on said sleeve, a worm meshing with said worm wheel and constituting the driving connection between said box wheel and said sleeve and also capable of being turned about the axis of its shaft only to eifect angular adjustment of said box wheel and said sleeve relatively to one another, a double gear wheel carried by said box wheel and in driving connection with said worm shaft, a reverse gear in mesh with the said double gear wheel, a further wheel co-axial with said 5'1 box wheel and gearing directly with said double gear'wheel or indirectly therewith through said reverse gear, means co-axial with the box wheel operable to determine whether said further wheel meshes directly or indirectly with said double gear 9, wheel, with which it is normally free to rotate,
an'd'means associated with said further wheel by which its rate of rotation can be controlled and so the angular adjustment of said sleeve relativelyto said box wheel be effected in either a for- 5 ward or reverse direction.
