2 Claims.
My invention relates to printing press roll shifting means and certain objects of the invention are to provide adjusting means whereby the rolls of a printing press may be turned and set with respect to the driving means so that; after first printing with one color, the printing of additional colors will conform and register with the colors previously printed. Further objects are to provide an adjusting means that is simple in construction, and easy and quick to operate, and which will give a very refined adjustment of the rolls. Still further objects are to provide adjusting means that is of general application and which may be applied to printing presses in vari ous ways.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a view in central longitudinal section of the gear shifting means; and Fig. 4 is a view in central longitudinal section of the device for operating the gear shifting means.
Referring to the drawing throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, the numeral 5 indicates a portion of a printing press frame whereon is journaled a horizontal drive shaft 6 on which is fixed a bevel gear 1. Said bevel gear meshes with another bevel gear, designated by the numeral 8, which is fixed on the lower end of a vertical shaft 9, and on which shaft is fixed an additional pair of spaced apart gears l0 and H. The gear drives another bevel gear |2 that is integral with a wide helical gear l3 which is revolubly mounted on a stub shaft fixed to the frame 5.
A narrow helical gear |4 meshes with the wide helical gear l3. The helical gear I4 is integral with a hollow hub l5, and another narrow helical gear I5 is made an integral part of said hub outside of the narrow gear H. The outer helical gear l6 meshes .with a wide helical gear I! which is secured to a spur gear l8 by means of bolts l9 passing through slots 20 provided in the helical gear IT. A type or plate carrying roll 2| has its end axle 22 journaled through the frame 5, and the spur gear I8 is keyed or otherwise fixed on said end axle. The spur gear |8 meshes with another spur gear 23 fixed on an end axle which is journaled through the frame 5 and fixed to a press roll 24 which engages the type roll.2|. A paper 25, upon which the printing is done, passes between the rolls 2| and 24.
The gear shift or adjusting arrangement, shown in Fig. 3, embodying the narrow inner and outer helical gears l4 and I8 respectively and forming a part of the hollow hub I5 is a very important feature of my invention. Said hollow hub is revolubly mounted on a sleeve 26 one end of which is fixed through the frame 5. A rod 21 extends slidably through said sleeve and the frame, and the end 20 of the hollow hub is journaled on said rod. A thrust bearing 29 is mounted on said rod against the inside of said hub end and two nuts 30 form a bearing for the outside of said hub end. In this arrangement it will be apparent that the hollow hub l5 revolves both on the sleeve 28 and on the rod 21, and said rod may be turned and slidably moved back and 20 forth thus carrying the hollow hub with it.
The detail means for turning and slidably moving the rod 21 is shown in Fig. 4 wherein a hand wheel 3| is fixed on its end. The end portion of said rod is threaded at 32 and said threaded 25 portion extends through an internally threaded bearing member 33 which is fixed to the frame 5. Said bearing is split and a bolt 34 extends through the split portion whereby same may be clamped tightly against the rod to retain some in a stationary position as will be understood. It will be apparent that by turning the wheel 3|, the rod 21 may be slidably and revolubly moved back and forth as desired and the hub I5 together with its gears l4 and I6 will be moved back and forth with it.
When the hub I5 is moved back or forth its narrow gear II will be slidably moved along the face of the wide gear l3. Both of said gears, having helical teeth or teeth which slant with respect to their axes, the gear M will be turned, it being assumed that the gear l3 remains stationary. This will turn the hub l5 and gear IS which gear will turn the gear I! thus turning the type roll 2|,
and will also turn the roll 45 24 through the medium of the gears l8 and 23. This arrangement provides a quick, easy and refined means for adjusting the rolls relative to each other and with respect to the drive shaft 6. Said rolls may thus be either set forward or backward by turning the handle 3|, and when they are set to the required position the bolt 34 is tightened thus retaining them in the desired position. A coarse adjustment of the rolls may first be made by loosening the bolts l9 and turning the gear l1 whereby the slots 20 will slldably low hub having a pair of gears formedthereon move on said bolts which may then be tightened. in spaced apart relation, a rod slidably and revo- My device is of practical use in setting type or lubly mounted through the frame, said hub revplate rolls tor the purpose o1 lining up and matcholubly mounted on said rod and arranged to sliding colored printwork where one or more 001- ably move therewith, a threaded connection beors have previously been printed and it is desired tween the rod and framameans for manually to print another color. It provides means revolving the rod, one of the gears on the holwhereby the additional color is caused to print low hub having helical teeth meshing with the at the correct place instead of being too far above teeth of the helical gear of the driving gear sysor below the correct place which has often been tem, the other gear meshing with one of the gears the case.
