Abstract
380,957. Grinding and sharpening wire cards. DRONSFIELD, J., Atlas Works, Oldham. Oct. 8, 1931, No. 27916. [Class 60.] Gauges.-A portable apparatus for re-grinding or re-pointing the teeth of wire clothing of carding engine cylinders, doffers, &c. whilst in position, consists of means for traversing a rotating grinding-wheel along the card and simultaneously, and very slowly, feeding the grinding-wheel to penetrate between the teeth and to be retracted therefrom. The apparatus comprises a rail a adapted to be clamped to the frames a<1> of the carding engine and carrying slide beds a<2> on which are slides b, adjustable by screw means b<2>, b<3> and carrying upper slides c. On the slides c is mounted a slotted tube d, supported by tubular extensions d<1>, d<2>, which form bearings for the ends d<3>, d<4> of a double threaded screw d<5> with which engages a member d<8> mounted in a sleeve d<17> rotatable in a fork d<6>, the rotation of the screw thus causing reciprocation of the fork, and with it, a multiple disc grinder e rotatable with, but slidable on a shell e<1>, also carried by the slides c. The slides c and the grinder &c. are moved very slowly towards and from the card f by eccentrics g, carried by the extensions d<1>, d<2> and engaging sheaths s connected by anchorages s<2> to brackets b<1> on the slides b, and the eccentrics and the tube d are rotated very slowly, from the screw d<5>, by a train of gearing h<1>, h<3>, i<1>, i<2>, k<2>, k<4>, m<1>, m<2>, m<3>, n<1>, the gear n<1> being on a cap n secured to the part d<1>, and the gears k<4>, m<1> being formed on the inside of a casing j, which is rotatable, to set the grinder in any desired initial position, by worm teeth o<1> and a worm o<5>, the setting being indicated by a scale o and a pointer o<6>. The shell e<1> is driven at a high speed by a pulley e4, and the screw d<5> is driven slowly by a chain wheel d<9>, the drives being obtained from the shaft of the cylinder of the carding engine, which shaft is driven slowly by an epicyclic gear replacing the ordinary pulley. A gauge is provided for setting the discs of the grinder to penetrate between the teeth to a desired extent, the gauge comprising a saddle r, Fig. 11, adapted to be applied to the shell e<1>, and carrying a spring-pressed plunger r<2> adapted to be locked by a screw r<3> and a plate r<5>, on a bar r<4>, adapted to be brought, by rotation of the bar, to contact with the grinders and with the plunger r<2>. Specifications 9817*/92 and 18878/93, [both in Class 120, Spinning], are referred to.
