In the operation of the grinding machine,
the grinding wheel provided with a grinding surface in the form of a helix is caused to engage with the splines of the shaft to be corrected, and in the-rotation of the grinding wheel, the splined shaft is rotated in synchronism therewith so that the splines are corrected in circumferential bands or zones, the shaft beingadvanced upon completion of one section or band so as to presentanother successive section or band to the action of the grinding wheel. At times it becomes necessary to true up the grinding wheel in order to insure accuracy in the work operated upon, and it is the purv pose of my present-invention to achieve this result. The invention resides in a pressure roller of hardened metal having a surface which is formed as the complement of the grinding roller and which is adapted to be rought into engagement therewith at the desired times. The surface pressure of the two rollers is regulable, and when brought together, a joint rotation is effected at the same surface speed. As a result of the pressure exerted during the rotation of the two rollers, the surfaces of the grinding roller are accurately trued up in a very expeditious manner.

The'novel features of the invention will now be specifically described and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a viewin side elevation showing my improved machine, parts being in secband pulley 14 fixed thereon.
A bracket 15 guided for vertical movement upon the frame 10 is adjusted as to po sition by a screw 15 stepped in a bracket 17 at its lower end, its upper end being threaded into the bracket 15. A bed 18, upon which is mounted the devices for supporting the. shaft 19, the splines of which are to be corrected, is guided for lateral movement longitudinally on the.bracket 15, and may be 8 moved by operation of the hand wheel 20. The devices supporting the splined shaft may be moved. longitudinally on the bed 18, through the operation of the hand wheel 21, so as to bring the successive bands or 'zones of the shaft 19 into engagement with the grinding surface of the wheel 12.
A spiral gear or worm 22, on the end of the shaft 11 is in engagement with a like gear 23 on the shaft24, extending at an angle to the shaft 11. At its other end, the shaft 24 is provided with a bevel gear 25 engaging a like gear on'the rear end of the shaft 26. The front end of the shaft 26 is provided. with 95 a spiral gear or worm 27, in mesh with alike splines of which are to be corrected. In this 4 manner the movements of rotation of the-100,

Surmounting the frame or pedestal 10 is a standard 30, on which is guided for vertical movements a slide 31. The slide 31 is provided with bearings 32 and 33, in which 1s journaled the shaft 34 of the truing wheel 35. The shaft 11 of the grinding wheel 12 and the shaft 34 of the truing wheel 35 are connected by four pinions 36, 37, 38 and 39. The pinion 36 is fixed upon the shaft 11 and is held in engagement with the pinion 37 by means of links 40 and 41, embracing the shaft 11 and thefioating stud 42 upon which the pinion 37 is mounted. The pinion 39 is fixed on the shaft 34 and is in engagement with the pinion 38, which latter ismo'unted on a stud 43 fixed in an extension 44 of the slide 31'. The pinions37 and 38 are held in engagement by means of links 45 and 46, which embrace both the floating stud 42and the fixed stud 43. A screw 47 mounted in the upper end of -the standard 30 is restrained against longitudinal movement, and its lower end is threaded into an ear 48 formed on the slide 31. By means of a hand wheel 49, the screw 47 may be rotated so as to impart vertical movement to the slide 31 which supports. the truing wheel 35. The links 40, 41

By rotating the screw 47 through the hand 3 wheel 49, the-truing wheel 35 is brought into engagement with the grinding wheel 12. The arts being in rotation, the pressure exerted y the truing wheel 35 upon the surface of the grinding wheel 12 will restore in a very accurate degree the conformation of the latter. The pressure of the truing wheel 35 will. be maintained for such time and with such force as may be necessary to recondition the tubular member of chilled iron having great It maybe mounted upon the shaft 34, andretained in sition by a demountable ring 51, attached endof the drum 53, and serving to clamp the tubular'truing wheel 35 against a flange 52 to the at the other end of the drum. The grinding or spline correcting wheel 12. may be mount ed in a similar manner with respect to the shaft 11. In the first assembly of'the wheels 12 and 35, their complemental surfaces should be'brought into exact register.
