Abstract

Pebble or cockle effects are produced by treating fabrics containing yarns having a basis of organic derivatives of cellulose and other yarns with a solution of a thiocyanate in such concentration that only the yarns of organic derivatives of cellulose are shrunk. The other yarns may be of regenerated cellulose or of cotton, linen, wool or silk. The preferred thiocyanate is ammonium thiocyanate, but the sodium, potassium and calcium salts are also suitable. The treatment may be applied to the whole fabric by immersion in a bath, or locally by printing with a suitable paste, the paste being removed after shrinkage has been effected. In an example, a fabric containing cellulose acetate and viscose yarns is immersed for 2 mins. in a 12 DEG B<\>ae. solution of ammonium thiocyanate at 15 DEG C., hydro-extracted, washed with cold water and dried without tension.
