[Class 80 (ii)] Friction synchronizing means for a positive toothed clutch for use in variable-speed gear. ing comprises rods 11 slidable longitudinally in holes in the movable clutch member 1 but normally restrained by spring-loaded ball detents 13, the ends of the rods being bevelled to engage a bevelled surface 16 formed on the fixed gear-and-clutch member 6 or 7. The rods may be polygonal or circular, and engage the surface 16 with only a part of their bevelled ends, so that, if the rods are circular, they tend to turn about their own axes and thus augment the friction action. The clutch teeth 4 and 5 on the clutch members are formed by drilling longitudinal countersunk holes, such as 8, and then recessing the side faces so as to leave semicircular depressions. Alternatively, the gear teeth of the member 6 or 7 may be utilized as clutch teeth. The male teeth may be provided on the member 1 and the female teeth on the gear 6 or 7, and the inclination of the bevel surfaces may be reversed.
