489,587. Yielding couplings. BARBAROU, M. J.- B. June 24, 1937, No. 17605. Convention date, June 26, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] In a yielding shaft coupling, the driving and driven parts are interconnected by levers, movement of which is resisted by the centrifugallyinduced pressure of a body of oil. The levers are pivotally mounted on radially-arranged pins 17 carried by a ring 8 which is fixed to a cylindrical extension 7 of a flange 7a of the driving-shaft 1. Each lever has a longitudinally-extending arm 25 extending into a swivelling bush 26 mounted in a ring 22 which is journalled on the ring 8 and which is coupled to the driven shaft 2 through claw teeth 28. Each lever also has a circumferentially-extending arm 18 which carries a swivelling shoe 20 bearing against a piston 10 slidable in the cylinder 7. Oil is supplied, through a passage 29, to. the space 31 between the piston and the flange 7a. During rotation, the oil forms a ring, the thickness of which is determined by an overflow aperture 32 in the piston, and the centrifugally-induced oil pressure urges the piston to the left, assisted by a spring disc 15. Turning movement of the levers is limited by arms 18a which come into contact with a radial flange 24 of the ring 8.
