Valves and valve seats, arrangement of. - In sleeve-valve gear for engines, pumps, or compressors, risk of damage from seizure or overloading of the valve is prevented by transmitting the drive through a frangible part the material of which is similar to that of the valve and is preferably centrifugally cast iron. The fragments are caught in a cover. In multiple-cylinder apparatus, a single breaking piece may be employed for each valve or for all the valves. The sleeve A is operated by a crank pin C on a shaft E carrying a fixed disc F and a loosely-mounted gear wheel G driven from the crank-shaft. The wheel G has a slotted part G<1> which engages frangible, undercut, radial ribs J<2> on a disc J mounted on pins F' in the disc F. The sleeve K catches the fractured parts.
