July 24, 1926 Valve gear. - In order to facilitate resetting of the sleeve valves of multicylinder engines to the correct timing alter dismounting, the shaft actuating the sleeves valves is mounted in bearings attached to the cylinder block so as to be removed therewith. The correct timing of this shaft may also be ensured by providing a coupling-rod drive from the crank shaft. The valve shaft J is mounted in bearings J<2> secured by bolts E <2> to the underside of the cylinder block. The shaft J carries a wheel J<1> gearing with a wheel H secured to a rotary member E mounted in a bearing E<1>, which may be integral with the bearing J<2>. The member E drives sleeve valves D through spherical joints G. The shaft J is driven by coupling-rods K connecting eccentrics J<3> to corresponding eccentrics on the crank shaft. The sleeve valves of each pair of adjacent cylinders may be actuated by a single rotary member between them; or the end cylinders of a block may be fitted with separate rotary members, the intermediate cylinders being worked in pairs, this latter arrangement bringing the sleeve-actuating members over the crank-shaft bearings. The bearings at one or both ends of the coupling-rods may be formed in two halves to facilitate disconnection. Chain gear may replacethe gearing J<1>, H.
