[Class 96] The formation of air bubbles in pulp above the breast roll 2 of a high - speed papermaking machine is reduced or prevented by an enclosure 5 adjacent the wire on the breast roll and extending to the pulp outlet 4. The enclosure 5 may have a suction pipe 6 and a drain pipe 7, which may be exhausted with those for the main suction boxes of the machine, or the suction may be produced by a waste-water " injector." A grooved packing 1 adjustable by bolts 3, wipes water from the wire cloth. In modifications, a rubber-covered roll is mounted between packing and the breast roll ; the packing is close to the outlet 4.
