Abstract

Dry powdered compositions, readily dispersible in aqueous media, are obtained by mixing insoluble or difficultly soluble dyestuffs, or other solid substances, with a potassium salt of a saturated soap-forming fatty acid, which salt is crystallizable from water and substantially free from glycerine. A suspension of the potassium salt may be mixed with a suspension of the solid, evaporated to dryness and ground. The fatty acid salt preferably contains at least 14 carbon atoms, potassium stearate and palmitate being specified. Vat dyes or water-insoluble dyes having an affinity for cellulose acetate artificial silk such as aminoanthraquinone nitrodiarylamine, azo and "S.R.A." dyes, in general, or insoluble solid dyestuff intermediates may be treated. The production of white or coloured pigments is also referred to. In the example commercial sodium stearate is treated with hydrochloric acid, the stearic acid separated, washed with water and treated with water and potassium carbonate; to the cooled suspension of crystalline potassium stearate a paste of a -ethanolaminoanthraquinone is added and the mixture is evaporated to dryness and powdered. The compositions preferably contain 20-30 per cent of the potassium salt.ALSO:Dry powdered compositions, readily dispersible in aqueous media, are obtained by mixing insoluble or difficultly soluble solid substances with a potassium salt of a saturated soap - forming fatty acid, which salt is crystallizable from water and substantially free from glycerine. Vat or other insoluble dyes or intermediates or white or coloured pigments are produced in dry powdered form readily capable of dispersion. The compositions contain 20-30 per cent of the potassium salt. Dispersions of aminoanthraquinones, e.g. a - ethanolaminoanthraquinone, nitrodiarylamines, azo and S.R.A. dyes in general are especially suitable for use in dyeing cellulose acetate artificial silk.
