Abstract
In an improved method of operating an evaporator, steam is introduced into the interior of externally heated tubes traversed by the solution to be evaporated, the quantity of steam being in excess of that necessary to raise the heat-transfer figure between the tube wall and the solution to the maximum attainable during steam injection, and the steam is then suddenly shut off. It is stated that after this the evaporator operates with a heat-transfer figure higher than the maximum attainable during steam injection. If the amount of steam injected is 8 per cent of the steam generated within the tube the heat-transfer figure rises about 50 per cent above the figure obtained in normal operation. This is the highest attainable with steam injection. If the amount of steam is increased to 59 per cent the heat-transfer figure falls but if the steam is shut off suddenly the transfer figure rises about 100 per cent above its value before steam injection.
