Abstract

480,403. Heating water. RUTHS ARCA ACCUMULATORS, Ltd., and RITCHIE, E. G. March 8, 1937, No. 6813. [Class 64 (i)] Cold water sprayed from a pipe 8 into a chamber 6 is heated simultaneously by exhaust and live steam supplied through pipes 4, 9, and by steam given off by condensate supplied through a pipe 5. Raschig rings, balls or the like 7 are placed in the chamber, the lower part of which forms a hot well 12. Steam from a boiler 1 passes by a pipe 2 to a turbine 3, whence exhaust steam enters pipe 4 and the condensate is returned by pipe 5. Temperature or pressure in the chamber 6 controls a valve 11 in the cold water pipe 8 and a valve 10 in the live steam pipe 9, which latter is also opened by excess pressure in the live steam pipe 2. The valve 11 may be controlled by the water level in the chamber 6. A pump 13 moves water from the wall 12 to an accumulator tank 15 through a pipe 16 with a valve 14 controlled by water level in the chamber, which has a safety valve 18. The accumulator has a level gauge 17, and the boiler firing is increased when this is low. If the exhaust steam from the turbine 3 is oily, an indirect contact heater supplied with cold water from the pipe 8 may be arranged in the pipe 4.
