Abstract
A retort for low-temperature carbonization of wood or cellulose materials, or for distilling acetate of lime, is heated indirectly from a heat generator by a heat transmitting medium such as steam, water or oil, or a gas, ducts or tubes carrying the medium being located on the inner side of the retort walls in close proximity thereto, and enclosing the retort space. A tubular heater b2 with a combustion chamber b1 communicates with a pump p which circulates the heating fluid through valves o to heating ducts in the retort wall. Banks of the ducts or tubes 2 are arranged close to the walls 1. The trucks on which the material is charged are supported by axles 10 from rollers 9 running in recesses in the retort wall, but may be suspended <PICT:0488313/III/1> <PICT:0488313/III/2> from an axle at the top of the retort. One or more partition walls may be provided which are also heated by the circulating fluid and which divide up the charge. The tar from the distillation falls into a gutter k through apertures l, and is drained off from a receptacle n through a tube n2. The gutter and receptacle may be enclosed by a shell n3 for heating or cooling purposes.
