Abstract
239,069. Fairbrother, H., (Jackson Research Corporation). Oct. 13, 1924. Coking processes.-Cannel coal &c. is distilled by external heating in a retort, in which the air and moisture are first driven off by heating and then replaced by an inert gas before raising the temperature, and the heating is regulated or equalized by circulating an inert gas. which may be part of the gas produced in the process, through the charge. A portion of the liquid condensates derived from the retort gases or vapours may be returned to the retort with the inert gas. The charge is heated in a retort 1 by a furnace 7 and the distillates passed through condensers 12, 15 for collecting heavy and light oils and through a condenser 18 leading to a collecting tank 20 from which a fan 23 which acts as a further condenser drives the gas by pipes 27, 28 to an inlet 29 at the top of the retort. Surplus gas passes by pipe 30 and gasometer 31, which acts as a pressure equalizer, to scrubber 34 and outlet 43 to a gas storage tank. At starting, gas from the gasometer 31 is passed through the retort and the air and steam driven out through pipe 8 and replaced with inert gas. The inert gas may be introduced at the bottom and the condensers in the circuit may be dispensed with. Oil condensed from the gas may be introduced into the retort by the gas current.
