Bulk evaporators.-Apparatus for the distillation of heat treatment of carbonaceous or other materials, especially adapted for determining the nature and amount of volatile constituents of liquids or solids comprises an inner chamber in which a sample of the material is heated, the heating medium such as steam or combustion gases or an inert gas such as producer or water gas, being used to heat the charge, firstly externally and secondly by passage tbeiretlirough. The material is supplied to the inner chamber A which has a perforated bottom E and is enclosed in an outer chamber B heated by the hot gases passing through a coil C, these gases entering by a pipe M the space D surrounding the chamber A and passing upwards through the charge, the gases and vapours escaping by the pipe G to a condenser. Thermometers G<1> and J are provided in the gas outlet pipe and charge respectively. The bottom of the chamber B mav be heated by a gas burner H. When treating liquids the inner chamber may be provided with a vertical tube the lower end of which opens into the space D, the upper end being covered by a hood the skirt of which extends to the base of the inner chamber and is perforated, the hot gases passing) through the liquid. The hood may have spiral fins on its exterior to prolong contact between the gases and liquid.
