Abstract
<PICT:0390634/III/1> Sulphuric acid is concentrated progressively in a series of stages under high vacuum by gradual and regulable indirect heating effected by circulating a heated fluid in a closed path round or through the acid in the various stages, the vapour released from each stage being passed into weaker acid than that from which it is emitted. Dilute acid from a supply tank 1 passes by gravity through a series of vessels 2, 4, 6 heated by pipes 9, 10, 11, forming with a heater 7 a closed circuit through which oil is circulated by a pump 12. The vapours from the vessel 6 pass into the vessel 4 where they are forced into contact with the liquid by a baffle 4<1>, while the vapours from the vessel 4 similarly pass into the vessel 2, the vapours from which pass to an alkali vessel 13 and a condenser 14, maintained under vacuum by a pump 15.
