Abstract

487,222. Walls ; metal framework. KING, D. M. Nov. 16, 1936, No. 31286. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] A wall, partition, or the like, comprises a main framework formed of a plurality of channel girders 17, one or more subsidiary frames which are constructed of angle-irons 11. and are mounted within the space defined by the members of the main framework in such a manner that they are maintained slightly apart from each other and from corresponding members of the main framework, and panels 10 which are of a size corresponding to that of the subsidiary frames and are clamped to one face of the structure formed by the main and subsidiary framework. The clamping means for the panels comprises a joint-cover plate 12, a co-operating strip 14 applied over the rearwardly-directed edges of the frame members, and bolts 13 passing through the plate 12 and strip 14 and disposed in the spaces provided between adjacent members of the built-up structure. Fig. 1 shows the bolts 13 disposed in the space between the angle-irons 11 of adjacent subsidiary frames, with the channel strip 14 applied over the edges of these angle-irons, and Fig. 3 shows bolt-receiving spaces provided between the main girder 17 and the subsidiary frames, with the strips 14 fitting over the adjacent edges of the girder 17 and angle-irons 11. The girders 17 may, as shown in Fig. 2, be constructed to form a rectangular frame, and the subsidiary frames are then also constructed of rectangular form with additional transverse stiffeners 11a, if desired. The subsidiary frames, which are spaced slightly apart and from the main girders 17, are secured together and to the girders 17 by transverse bolts 16, and these may, as shown in Fig. 1, also extend through the strips 14. The spaces provided between adjacent angle-irons 11, and between angle-irons 11 and adjacent girders 17, may be filled with a suitable packing, or, if desired, washers may be mounted between the angle-irons. If desired., the girder 17 may be set forward with respect to the angle-irons 11 in order to allow for the thickness of the panels, in which case packing material may be inserted in the space thus formed between the limb of the girder and the strips 14. The corner joint between adjacent angle-irons 11 of each subsidiary frame may be strengthened by strips welded across the joint. The subsidiary frames may be of rectangular shape as shown in Fig. 2, or of triangular or any other suitable shape.
