Abstract

483,899. Air pistols. FOSS, W. July 15, 1937, No. 19606. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 17, 1938.] [Class 119] Relates to air pistols of the kind in which the barrel I is pivoted and arranged in front of an air cylinder 3 and is adapted when tilted to cock the spring piston of the cylinder by means of a cocking link. According to the invention, the cocking link 5 is arranged above the air cylinder 3. The front end of the link is pivoted at 6 to the barrel, which is pivoted at 4 to a front extension 2 of the air cylinder. The rear end of the link is forked and pivoted to a pin 8 on the rear abutment 9 of the spring 13 of the piston 10. The rod 11 of the piston has a shoulder 12 for engagement by a pawl 16 on the pin 8 to hold the piston cocked. In one form, Fig. 1, the pawl 16 engages the pin 8 by means of a slot 17 and is formed with a nose 19 to engage the shoulder 12 of the piston rod and with a finger 23 for co-operation with the sear 29. A spring 22 urges the pawl in the clockwise direction to make it engage the shoulder 12 during the cocking operation, the loose fit of the pawl allowing it first to ride over the shoulder. When the parts are in the cocked position, the finger 23 of the pawl lies in the same position as shown in Fig. 1 over a slot 31 in the air cylinder, but is held up by a nose 32 on the sear 29, which is supported by a pin 30. The sear is urged forward by a spring 33 and is connected by a pin-and-slot 28, 28a to the trigger 27 pivoted at 26. When the trigger is pulled the slack of the pin-and-slot is taken up and the seat also pulled, bringing its nose 32 opposite a slot 24 in the finger 23, whereupon the pawl can tilt and release the piston. In a modification, the pawl 16 is a two-armed lever pivoted on the pin 16, and is held in engagement with the shoulder 12 by a spring acting on its rear arm, until this is positively deflected by the rocking of a lever by the pull of the trigger connected to the lever by a link. A screw stop for the pawl can be adjusted to determine the load on the trigger.
