Abstract

819,571. Trigger mechanism for double barrelled guns. ORR, J. E. Nov. 23, 1955 [Nov. 23, 1954], No. 33965/54. Class 119 Relates to a double barrelled gun having a single trigger mechanism comprising means for selecting the order of firing and for preventing firing of the second barrel by the involuntary pull on the trigger caused by the firing of the first barrel. According to the invention an inertia member in the form of a rocker 26, Figs. 1, 2 is pivoted at 28 on the trigger frame pivoted at 22 on the action body, the weighted head 33 of the rocker having two outer abutment steps 35 and a central recessed abutment face 36 (or vice versa) adapted to engage the ends of pivoted seals 12, 13 each engaging with an associated tumbler 15 in the' cocked position. Selection of the barrel to be first fired is effected by moving the rocker 26 laterally along its pivot 28 so that the central face 36 and one or other of the outer steps 35 are located in lateral alignment with the seals 12, 13, the arrangement being such that on pulling the trigger 24 the trigger frame and rocker 26 are moved upwardly so that one step 35 engaging the sear 12 moves it upwardly to release it from its tumbler 15 to fire one barrel, the other recessed face 36 being out of reach of the sear 13. On rebound of the gun when the involuntary pull takes place, the rocker 26 pivots rearwardly to an inoperative position shown at 27, Fig. 1, and is then moved forwardly by a spring 31 to bring the face 36 beneath the sear 13 so that on the third pull of the trigger, the sear 13 is raised by the face 36 to fire the second barrel. The rocker 26 is moved axially of its pivot 28 for selection of the barrel to be fired first by means of a finger piece 39 on the end of a lever or, as shown, spindle 38 extending through the trigger frame, the other end engaging in a recess in the underside of the rocker so that on turning the spindle the rocker is moved along its pivot pin 28. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, latching means is provided for holding the rocker temporarily in the inoperative position. In this embodiment the rocker is formed with a central projecting abutment face 68 and two lower outer abutment faces 72, their faces co-operating with the inturned tails 70 of the two sears. In the cocked position shown one sear is engaged by the abutment face 68, the other sear tail being out of angular registration with either one or the other faces 72 according to the selection made. A tooth 59 on the rocker engages the forward vertical face 60 of a latching element 62, the sloping face 61 of the tooth engaging the horizontal face 84 of the element 62 in the inoperative position of the rocker. On pressing the trigger the rocker rises vertically to release the first sear 13 whilst the other sear remains out of contact with the abutment face 72. The tooth 59 rises clear of the face 60 and with recoil of the gun the rocker swings forwardly and the tooth face 61 comes into contact with the face 84. On rebound when the involuntary pull takes place the rocker swings rearwardly assisted by a spring 56 until the face 84 comes into contact with an under face 85 of the rocker. In this position one or other 'of the abutment faces 72 is brought into angular registration with the other sear tail and release of this sear takes place upon the third pull of the trigger. The parts of the rocker on which the abutment faces are formed may not be integral and selection as to the sear to be first released may be effected by moving one or more parts only of the rocker. In another arrangementthe abutment face operative to release the first sear may be divided in a median plane of the rocker into two parts which are relatively movable to the remainder or body of the rocker.
