[Class 63] A tool for pouncing, brushing, velveting, or finishing hats is driven in an elliptical path in a vertical plane and the hat is pressed against the tool with an adjustable pressure by a rotatable roller mounted at the end of a pivoted arm and driven by means contained within the arm. The pouncing tool 2, comprising an elastic pad of rubber, wool, or the like covered with abrasive paper or the like, is mounted on the end of an arm 1 which slides in a sleeve 4 and is attached at the other end to a crank pin 9 on a shaft 10. The sleeve 4 is free to rock about a bearing 6 and the shaft 10 is driven by an electric motor 11, preferably through an elastic coupling device 12. The roller 13, which is preferably of frustoconical form, is mounted on the arm 16 and is driven by the electric motor 11. Power is transmitted from the motor to the roller by means of a belt 42, pulleys 43 and 44, Fig. 2, shaft 41, Fig. 3, a worm 40 and worm wheel 39, and a series of shafts and bevel gears within the arm 16. The arm 16 can rotate on a bearing 18. By depression of a treadle 29, the roller can be pressed against the pouncing tool with a force limited by a yielding connection between the treadle and a lug on the arm 16. The yielding connection comprises a rod 27 and a tube 23 joined by a spring within the tube.
