Abstract

1,126,109. Grinding. O. P. RAPHAEL. 21 June, 1967 [21 June, 1966], No. 27705/66. Heading B3D. A method of grinding the edge of a lens comprises carrying out a template-guided first edge grinding operation and then subjecting the lens to a second edge grinding operation in another grinding machine free from template guidance and in which a lighter control pressure is applied than in the first grinding operation. In the first edge grinding operation, the lens is ground to the shape of the template in a first machine which has a grinding wheel having a symmetrical V groove of 120 degrees. The lens 14 is then mounted between the pads 16, 17 of the other machine, the pads being on shafts 18, 23 rotatably mounted in a frame 10 pivoted about a shaft 11 carried by a bracket 12 mounted on a pivot 13. The shafts 18, 23 are driven by chains 38, 39 from the shaft 11 which is connected by universal joints 25, 26 and a flexible drive 27 to an electric motor 29. A rod 47 extends from the frame 10 and is connected to a damper 50. The grinding wheel in the second machine may be finer than that of the first and have a V-groove of 90 degrees so as to form a bevel 51 on the convex surface 52 of the lens. The weight of the frame may be partially supported by a spring. Water may be used as a lubricant during grinding.
