Abstract
482,334. Airscrews. WILLOUGHBY, P. N. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25826. [Class 114] The blades of a screw propeller are provided at one or more places with an orifice or orifices flared toward the back surface thus forming at each position within the main aerofoil section two small aspect ratio aerofoils in tandem having the same angle of incidence, the leading edge of the rear section and the trailing edge of the other being constituted by the opposite surfaces of the flared opening and being separated by the width of the lower end of the orifice. Inner and outer orifices 5, 6 of elliptical form and with their major axes on a central radial line r are spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the major axis. The orifices are flared and the resultant sections are of aerofoil shape, and they are disposed with a geometrical pitch differing from that of the uninterrupted portion by 4‹. The orifices may be of pear or circular shape in true plan. Specification 370,892 is referred to.
