[Class 38 (v)] A hollow, stationary, insulating-member is so arranged in the switch-chamber and spaced at the appropriate distance from the blastnozzle opening that the gas is guided to the latter in a substantially radially-inward direction, one root of the arc being drawn by the movable contact into the interior of the guiding- member when that contact moves to break circuit. In Fig. 1, the fixed contact 1 is placed behind the nozzle 4 and the insulating- member 5 is mounted on the nozzle-member 15 by means of ribs 7, the annular channel 16 between 5, 15 producing the inward flow of gas to 4. Member 5 consists of, or is covered with, arc-resistant material, such as hard rubber, aminoplast, fibre, or other organic material giving off gas or vapour under the arcaction, and is long enough to ensure the arcs having been quenched before the movable contact 2 emerges. In Fig. 2, the nozzle is formed in contact 1, and the blast from 20 flows into the member 5 when contact 2 enters the latter, and thence into supplementary chamber 19, which may be connected to atmosphere. Opening 14 in member 5 may be constricted, after the arc is drawn, by radiallyinward moving members. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 described three other forms of switch not employing a gas-guiding member. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
