[Class 39 (i)] In a multiplier one or more of the cathodes of which are pervious and in which the stream passes through a negative prismatic or cylindrical electrode, the concentrating effect of this electrode is reduced. A series of pervious secondary cathodes may be arranged to have in turn smaller spacings whereby the penetration of the concentrating field grows less ; the beam may initially pass through a ring-shaped dispersing electrode to increase its cross-section. Alternatively, a series of pervious electrodes may be convex to the collecting electrode whereby a divergent field is obtained, or the surrounding electrode may be divided into portions at decreasing negative potentials along the path of the beam.
