Abstract

Crude mercaptothiazoles are purified by treating the crude material in a molten state with a dilute acid preferably of about 1 per cent strength. Acids mentioned are inorganic acids such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, or nitric acids, and organic acids such as acetic and chloracetic acids. The process of the invention is particularly applicable to mercaptothiazoles when made by the process described in Specification 283,679, [Class 2 (iii)]. Compounds mentioned which may be purified by this invention are mercaptobenzothiazole, 1-mercapto - tolyl thiazoles, 1 - mercapto - xylylthiazoles, 1 - mercapto - naphthathiazoles, 1-mercapto - alkoxy - benzothiazoles, and 1-mercapto-3-phenyl-benzothiazole.
