Abstract
Zinc residues, such as those obtained in galvanizing processes, from foundry operations, or from the use of zinc as a reducing agent, are subjected in the presence of sufficient water to form a slurry to distillation under oxidizing conditions with progressive heating to 1000 DEG C. or more. The bulk of the impurities present is thus volatilized or destroyed, leaving a crude zinc oxide which may be purified by volatilization from remaining nonvolatile impurities. Before distillation, the residues may be washed to extract soluble impurities and insoluble matter which remains suspended in the washing water; in this event, sufficient water for the heat treatment is allowed to remain.
