Abstract

263,034. Harris, H., (Heberlein, K. B.). June 11, 1926. Tin oxides, particularly such as contain small quantities of arsenic or antimony, are purified by heating in solid form with a small percentage of an alkali carbonate, preferably sodium or potassium carbonate, or of an alkali mineral acid salt, e.g. sodium sulphate, proportioned to the percentage of impurities to be removed, and then leaching to remove the soluble impurities, pureferably after grinding the heated mass with water. The mixture is preferably heated to at least 1000‹ C., and the heating with alkali carbonate and leaching may be repeated, if necessary. If the impure oxide, already contains an alkali carbonate or an alkali mineral acid salt by reason of its origin, the addition of these purifying agents may be unnecessary. Suitable proportions of carbonates to be added for each part of arsenic or antimony are 2.7 parts of sodium carbonate or 4 parts of potassium carbonate. The invention is particularly applicable to the treatment of stannic acid derived from alkali stannate solutions by treatment with acids, as, for example, that obtained as a by-product in treating impure molten lead for the removal of tin, arsenic and antimony as described in Specification 213,638.
