Abstract

479,466. Sifting-apparatus. STRAIN, G. H. Aug. 7, 1936, No. 21788. [Class 117] A method of screening consists in utilizing a screen to which a vibratory motion having a vertical component is imparted and which is suddenly stopped when its velocity is such that the material being screened is thrown clear of the surface, the screen being held stationary at the instant when the material again comes in contact with the surface whereupon it is moved downwardly with a velocity substantially the same as that of the materials. Preferably the screen has a simple harmonic motion in a straight line and is arrested at the point of maximum upward velocity, and the height to which the material is thrown is greater than half the diameter of the screen perforations. Apparatus for carrying the invention into effect is shown in the Figure. A screen 2 is supported by spring strips 3, and is driven by a crank 7 and connecting rod 8 passing freely through the screen frame and connected thereto through the medium of springs 9. Resilient buffers 10 on the screen frame engage fixed stops 11. Clamping and adjusting screws are provided for altering the position of the stops 11, and the position of the buffers 10 can be varied by adjusting the springs 9.
