Abstract
478,963. Window regulators. SLEIGH, H. L., and CHESTON, A. S.; and STUART, G. M., and McELROY, M., [Representatives of STUART, F. J.]. July 24, 1936, Nos. 20598/36 ; and 13343/37 divided out of 478,975. [Class 20 (iii)] A window regulator for sliding windows is provided with means permitting the window to be closed independently by hand. The device as shown in Fig. 1 is of the kind described in Specification 399,282 and is mounted on the guard rail of a half-drop window as described in Specification 478,975 and is characterized in that the pinion-shaft 19 is driven by a free-wheel device comprising a spring-pressed ratchet sleeve 35 engaging ratchet teeth on the wormwheel 22. The sleeve is slidably but non- rotatably mounted on the pinion-shaft 19. The arrangement shown in Fig. 5 comprises an expanding spring 45 frictionally engaging the pinion. casing and adapted to be freed therefrom by a pin 48 on the handle spindle during a lost motion engagement between a dog 49 on, the spindle and a slotted opening on the pinion. When raising the window by hand the spring is contracted by the engagement of an end thereof with a hole in the pinion. The pinion may also be driven by a quick-thread screw integral with the handle spindle a lost-motion being allowed in the casing between the stop pin 59 and the screw 57 and the casing walls, Fig. 7. The pinion in this modification is retained by a spring 55 engaging ratchet teeth on the face of the pinion and allowing the window to be raised by hand as well as by the handle. When lowering the window by the handle the screw 57 frees the end of the spring 55 from the ratchet teeth during the initial lost movement referred to. In the modifications described with reference to Figs. 5 and 7, pinions on opposite sides may be driven by bevel gearing or worm and wheel and a crossshaft. A hand-release may be provided for the holders of the ratchet-and-pawl kind and the window thereby freed for hand movement up or down.
