Abstract

514,689. Windows. QUICKTHO (1928), Ltd., and QUICK, W. May 9, 1938, No. 13805. [Class 20 (iii)] Sliding windows, such as half-drop vehicle windows, operated by rack-and-pinion mechanism, the racks being on the movable sash, are provided with slipping-clutch means in the driving connections, whereby the sash may be both raised and lowered by direct pressure from either the inside or the outside thereof. In the construction shown, each vertical side of the sliding sash 2 is fitted with a rack 3, which is protected by a strip (not shown) fitted to the channel guide 5. A hollow rail 7 is mounted on the upper edge of a lower fixed pane (not shown) and at each end of the rail is mounted a sleeve 14 bearing a pinion 11 meshing with the rack. Each sleeve is formed with a ring of hemispherical protuberances 15 which engage with similar protuberances on a ring 16a formed on an inner sleeve 16. The latter fits slidably over the reduced end of the driving shaft 8 and is urged by a spring 17 to bring the protuberances 15, 16a. into mesh. The sleeve 16 is formed also with teeth 20 which engage with teeth 21 formed on a collar 22 fixed to the shaft 8. The shaft is driven through worm gearing by an operating handle and the motion thereof is transmitted to the pinion 11. When the window is raised or lowered directly by hand, the shaft 8 is held stationary by the worm gear and'the protuberances 15 on the pinion sleeves 14 slip past those formed on the spring-controlled sleeve 16.
