Abstract

478,512. Controlling aircraft. GARDEN, A. D. July 17, 1936, No. 19832. [Class 4] A part or parts of an aerofoil is or are adapted to be moved to form a " wedge aerofoil " spaced from and in staggered association with the main section, a wedge aerofoil being defined as a body constituted by two plate-like elements of which[the leading edges are juxtaposed and of which the trailing edges are or are adapted to be appreciably separated, each or either element having a convex outer face. In one form, Fig. 1, elements 2, 3 hinged together at 4 are hinged to trailing edge of wing 1 at 7 and are adapted to move downwardly and open as shown to provide a passage 6. Slightly modified arrangements are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Elements 2, 3 may be nested in the upper or under surface of a wing and may be employed in conjunction with a split flap, as shown in Fig. 5. In all cases, the wedge aerofoil is, in plan view, wholly or partly overlapped by the main section. According to the Provisional Specification, wedge aerofoils may be formed in advance or to the rear of the main surface either by moving forwardly surfaces nested at the wing nose or by moving rearwardly and separating divided trailing edge elements.
