Abstract

The bath for use in the heat-treatment of light alloys containing magnesium described in the parent Specification has a content of monochromate such that the ratio of monochromate to dichromate lies between the equilibrium ratio set up between dichromate and monochromate at the temperatures (350-595 DEG C.) at which the bath is to be used and the ratio at which the bath ceases to be in a completely fused condition. The requisite amount of monochromate may be added to the bath or may be formed in the bath by the addition of substances such as caustic alkalies, or alkali metal peroxides, nitrates and carbonates which are adapted to convert part of the dichromate into monochromate.
