Abstract

In the cementation of steel and alloy steels, oil is mixed with a porous substance, such as kieselguhr, capable of sucking up the oil and serving as a binding and retaining means to form a paste-like mass into which the steels &c., previously heated up to the cementation temperature, is immersed to harden it. The steel &c. is left in the mass for a few minutes and then may be heated up to 720-900 DEG C., and then quenched. Oils containing nitrogen such as aniline oil or ortho-toluidine are preferably employed. An alloy steel containing 0,1-0,5 per cent of carbon, 4 of nickel, 0,3 of chromium, 0,5 of manganese and 0,35 of silicon is referred to.
