Abstract

475,021. Change-speed driving-mechanism for cycles. VANTOCH, E., and KNEIFEL, J. June 15, 1937, No. 16587. [Classes 136 (i) and 136 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In change-speed driving-mechanism for cycles of the type in which the chain 1 is moved laterally for selective engagement with driven sprockets 2, 3, 4, of different sizes, each sprocket is provided, by reduction of tooth thickness, with two spaced marginal ramps 6, 7 sloping in opposite directions, the corresponding ramps on adjacent sprockets sloping in the same direction and forming a substantially helical path for the passage of the chain from one sprocket to the other. One or more teeth may be entirely omitted on one or more of the sprockets where the ramp is thinnest, i.e. where the helical path passes from one sprocket to the other. The chain is shifted by a spring-urged rocking fork 8 connected by a cable 12 to a hand-lever 14, which simultaneously controls through a cable 21 a lever 20, carrying a jockey pulley 19. The lever 14 is spring-pivoted, and is pressed laterally by a blade-spring 18 to engage a peg on the lever with a selected hole in a quadrant 16.
