[Class 146 (iii)] In a multiple pencil holder in which selectively interchangeable lead holders are individually advanced bymeans of sliding members through guide slots in the pencil casing and are retained against the action of a return spring by engaging a recess, the looking means which holds one of the lead-holders in operative position is released by the advance of any of the other holders. The lead-holders 3, 4, Fig. 1, are connected to springs B, which carry knobs 8 whose webs 6 pass through guide slots 7 in the casing 1, and through cam slots 18 in a revoluble casing 17, loosely screwed on to a magazine casing 13. After the holders 3, 4 have been engaged with the casing 17 by passing the knobs 8 through enlargements 19 of the slots 18, the assembly is slid into the rear of the pencil, the webs 7 entering the open rear ends of the slots 7, and is secured by engaging projections 14 on the casing 13 with enlargements 15 of the slots 7 A cover casing 31 is secured by a screwed-on pocket clip 33 and cap 32. A return spring 9 presses rearwardly a casing 10 which engages the springs 5. During the forward movement of a holder 3, the web 6 engages first a cam-edge 24 on the slot 18, thus rotating the casing 17 in one direction, and then a cam-edge 22, rotating the casing 17 back so that the web 6, when the button is released, is pressed back by the spring 9 against the sholder 23. The widening 20 is sufficiently long to permit the holder, which is in the form of a rotary propelling pencil, to be protruded to advance the lead, but to be withdrawn until it only just protrudes for normal use. When a second lead-holder is advanced the first is released by the primary movement of the casing 17 and is returned by the spring 9. The withdrawn holders are retained in position by the frictional engagement of the springs 5 with the casing 17.
